This is one of my new works in my solo show at the Durham Arts Council. The digital collage started with a photograph of hand-dyed shibori cotton. I added the 1's and 0's and circles. The photo of the cardinal was taken at a local science museum (the bird is stuffed). Once the digital collage is complete, it's printed onto silk (with my Epson 2200 and Lyson Cave Paint inks), fused to cotton, backed with batting and back layer, and stitched by machine (and sometimes, hand).

Birds & Shibori -- a series of now 9 textile collages. Each collage is about 12" x 12" with digitally manipulated images printed on silk, silk shibori, and stitching. #1-6 are mounted on black duck cloth on stretcher bars. #7-9 are mounted in shadow box frames and covered with plexi-glass.

ArtMorgue.net is a (growing) collection of links, notes, images, resources for artists. I’ve had a collection of notes on art marketing, fiber art presentation ideas, which glue works for what, copyright issues, resources for public domain images, how to photograph art, where to get slides made from digital images, and possibly hundreds of notes on surface design and hand-dyeing fabric in my personal digital journal for years. Silk marked with rotten fruit, shibori dyed silk, digital print (of the dodge differential) on silk, quilted. I think the rot leaves really interesting marks, but health concerns about mold make this work the last of its kind for me. I may rot fruit on silk and then photograph for future works...

dodge differential

Early one evening I pulled into my driveway to see my husband had removed the differential cover from his truck. There was a bright light focused on the exposed differential and it was a lovely piece of machinery! I raced inside, asked Fred to please wait for me to get some photos before he put the cover back on, and grabbed my camera.

Many of my works include some variation of the differential image.

After working for a couple of years dyeing shibori and creating digital images to print on silk, it occurred to me that my shibori would be an interesting element _in_ my digital collages. Sometimes these digital collages are printed on silk and quilted, sometimes they are printed with my archival inkjet printer.

I am fascinated by natural patterns, man's machines, and the everyday junk all around us.

In my current work, I explore man's dialogue with nature primarily in hand-dyed shibori fabrics and digital imagery. I combine shibori and digital images to create fiber works and archival inkjet prints. Patterns created with natural processes are endlessly intriguing. I hand-dye cottons and silks with techniques based upon traditional Japanese resist dye methods (shibori). Shibori techniques produce patterned fabric with subtle variations. These patterns are natural, organic, complex and somehow, simple. The shibori dyed fabrics are sometimes quilted or collaged and sometimes photographed to be digitally manipulated. Machine images pervade my thoughts and I find them in my work. My digital photographs are altered, enhanced, collaged and sometimes printed onto cloth. As I work on a piece, I explore the influence and synergy of time, hand, and machine.

Plan for World Domination (aka 2006 New Year's Resolutions):

1. dye lots of shibori, make it my own.

2. take lots of photos -- get comfortable with manual exposure settings on my digital SLR and work on composition.

3. work on my digital collages.

4. enter more art exhibitions.

5. update my website -- AAARRRGGGHHHH, my site (www.triciamckellar.com) has needed updates/redesign for a year.
